Nampa Parks & Recreation hopes to have the Nampa Dog Park completed by Summer 2009. Located at the Kings Rd. overpass and Amity Ave, the park will offer drinking fountains, a walking path, landscaping, and a fenced, off-leash area for your dogs to play!

Dogs Deserve Better

I stumbled upon Dogs Deserve Better, a website dedicated to helping dogs that are inhumanely chained and penned. I've always wondered why people have dogs when they sit outside all day and all night? I suppose when the "puppy phase" is over alot of owners don't have any interest in the dog anymore. Dogs Deserve Better is helping put an end to this type of behavior. Check this out, they will even send information to the unfit caretaker of the dog if you are uncomfortable with approaching them yourself. You'll remain anonymous! I've personally dealt with this situation with our current neighbor.

I noticed that day in and day out our neighbor's little pug would be chained to their backyard post with a leash all day until they came home from work. There was no shade, no chew toys, and I didn't notice a water dish. I was ready to call the Humane Society. Occasionally the pug would make it's way out of it's collar and go under the fence to play with our dogs. We finally went over to our neighbor's house to let them know that their dog was making it's way over to our yard to play with our dogs. We made sure they knew we didn't mind because the dogs seemed to play just fine together, but we did want to make certain that the pug had it's shots, was de-wormed, and neutered. Luckily, the situation worked out in everyone's favor! All the dogs have a great time together, and it's one less dog that is left outside to merely exist.

15 Leash Training Tips

Pat Miller from the dogchannel.com gives us the DO'S & DON'TS of leash training our dogs!

1. DO use dog-friendly training methods to teach your dog to walk politely on leash so outings are enjoyable for you both.

2. DO keep slack in the lead anytime your dog isn't pulling.

3. DO keep excess leash material looped in your hand to avoid tripping.

4. DO use an appropriate leash and collar or harness to avoid injury to your dog and yourself.

5. DO exercise your dog off leash where safe and appropriate. A walk on leash is not adequate exercise for most dogs.

6. DO clean up after your dog whenever he eliminates on walks. Irresponsible dog-walkers spoil it for everyone.

7. DO use long lines or retractable leads only where there aren't other dogs and humans who could get tangled.

8. DO prevent your dog from rudely greeting others. Not everyone appreciates his exuberant salutations.

9. DO respect local leash laws, park regulations and homeowner association rules.

10. DON'T tether your dog to your waist or arm unless you are confident you're strong enough to restrain him if he pulls. Never tether him to the body of a child or physically challenged walker.

11. DON'T jerk on your dog's leash to prevent contact with dogs or humans. This can cause aggression. Instead, feed treats to regain his attention.

12. DON'T take your dog off his leash unless you're in a safely enclosed area, or a wide-open, dog-legal space and your dog comes reliably when called.

13. DON'T leave your dog tied and unattended on walks while you run into the storeeven for just a moment. Your dog is at risk for teasing, tormenting and theft.

14. DON'T let your dog soil lawns while on walks.

15. DO take your dog for lots of long, enjoyable walks. They're good for both of you and for your relationship!

How Lucky Pup Bakery Got Started:

The inspiration for Lucky Pup Bakery is my Siberian Husky, Kaia. After becoming a proud pet parent I realized the importance of Kaia's health. Not only do I want the best nutrition for myself, but for my companion as well! In Kaia's early months, I wanted to make sure she had the best food, the best toys, the best care - only the best for my dog! That really got me thinking about her health. Whenever I would chop onions (poisonous to dogs), I would be incredibly careful about not letting any hit the floor. Afterwards, I would get on my hands and knees to make sure a little piece didn't slip by. Little did I know that many dog foods and treats sold on mass scales contain ingredients that are poisonous to dogs (garlic, onion, liver, etc). These can cause problems ranging from obesity to heart failure. I decided to start making my own dog treats for Kaia. I can control what's going into the food and I know what she's being exposed to. And as you know, homemade treats just taste better!
